Danielle Fujita

Danielle Fujita is one of only two female skating coaches in the NHL and there are only a total of thirteen skating coaches that are working full time for an NHL team. She has been working for the Calgary Flames since 2018 and has over 30 years of coaching experience. She takes a no-nonsense approach to her teaching and yet has a unique ability to truly connect with her athletes. Danielle genuinely cares about the players she works with but she is not ok with status quo, negativity or mediocrity and her coaching clearly reflects that. If she doesn’t see immediate improvement from her players she carries that as her responsibility. She believes that progress comes from effective teaching, accurate communication and creative problem solving. When you see her in action you really gain an appreciation for her gift of teaching!

Chris Kobelka

Chris has been coaching with Danielle for seven years now and training under her for nine. He is a defenseman currently playing in the Alberta Junior Hockey League for the Calgary Canucks. Chris is committed to, and will be playing at, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, a Division 1 school in the NCAA, next year. Chris’ coaching philosophy is to grow the love for skating as well as the skills within the game of hockey. Chris has a leadership style that is of a positive outlook, allowing focus on what the trainee is doing well while encouraging them to work on the aspects they are finding more difficult for improvement to occur. Chris values the importance of good character and hopes that those he instructs will realize that simply being a good person can open the doors to many future opportunities in their lives, he wants to be able to have a positive impact on his skaters' entire lives, not just the times within the rink.

Jake Dube

Jake is a passionate skills coach that enjoys helping player's reach their full potential. He was a player himself having been drafted to the Kootenay Ice of the WHL. Jake opted to pursue a scholarship in the United States; however, multiple injuries would force Jake to retire early.

After his junior career, Jake was brought on as an intern with Hockey Canada where he worked with the U17 and World Junior programs. After obtaining his university degree, he was promoted to the Men’s World Championship and Men’s Olympic Programs. He was fortunate to win gold during the 2021 Men’s World Championships in Riga, Latvia.

As a skills coach, Jake is a big believer in the force of compounding. His main goal is to help players become one-percent better than they were yesterday.

Danica Vangsgaard

Danica grew up in competitive figure skating, representing her home province (Beautiful British Columbia) at national-level competitions. After leaving figure skating, she joined rowing, racing for her province, country and university at various regattas. Danica studied kinesiology at Queen’s University, where she specialized in strength and conditioning. Since graduating, Danica has become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and is currently interning with Calgary Flames and coaching at the Canadian Sports Institute. Danica is keen to combine her experience in skating with her knowledge of strength and conditioning to develop hockey players both in the gym and on the ice. Beyond hockey, Danica works with triathletes, ultrarunners, and marathoners at Solo Sports Systems. For Danica, sport is as much about personal development as it is athletic development. She strives to help her athletes reach their full potential in sport and in life through a fun and focused sporting environment.

Evan Auld

Evan is currently playing U18AAA at Edge School and has trained with Danielle for the last six years and has been assisting with her for the last 3 years. Evan became a coach to help younger generations learn how to become more effective hockey players, without taking the fun aspect out of the game we love. From a young age Evan struggled with his confidence as a player and he felt that his speed and skill level were never good enough. Evan says, it’s because of this struggle that he hopes to be able to help young players overcome their own struggles to grow into amazing players! If you see Evan out on the ice or in the lobby, don’t be afraid to say hi! Everyone is included and accepted in the My Hockey House community!

Has coaching changed you as a player or person? If so, how?
Coaching has not only made me a better player but a better person as well. As a player I've gotten better at reading plays, communicating with teammates, understanding what the team needs in different situations. Off the ice, it's helped me grow a lot too. Coaching has taught me patience, how to explain things clearly, and how to be a better leader. It's not just about showing someone what to do, but helping them build confidence and provide them with the tools to achieve personal excellence.
If you could replace pucks with any other object for one game, what would it be?
I think switching the puck for a donut would be funny and if you scored you would get to eat the donut!

I have my Masters in Chemistry and I teach high school chemistry and physics. I love bringing science and biomechanics into my lessons to help players understand the skating mechanism and then they can apply that knowledge to other aspects of their skating.
If you weren't a hockey player or figure skater, what would you be doing?
I have a lot of self-confidence (or maybe it is delusion) so I think I would be great at a lot of things. A few careers I think I would excel at are zumba instructor, farmer and being a mascot.
Has coaching changed you as a player or person? If so, how?
Coaching has changed me as a person because it has made me realize the importance of effective communication and understanding that everyone has a different learning style. Due to this, I have become better at communcating information and using multiple explanations, examples, visuals and demonstrations to help players grasp a better understanding about their skating. Coaching is very personable to me and I enjoy connecting with each player I work with. Every session I teach, I leave having learned from the skaters through their questions and our conversations, as much, if not more, than they have learned from me!
